Physiotherapy: what is it?

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) physiotherapy is:

“The art and science of treatment by means of therapeutic exercise, heat, cold, light, water, massage, and electricity. In addition, Physiotherapy includes the execution of electrical and manual tests to determine the value of involvement and muscle strength, tests to determine functional capacities, joint range of motion and vital capacity measurements, as well as aids_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_diagnostics for the control of evolution”. Physiotherapy is a discipline that is included in the Health Professions Regulation Law.

For its part, the World Confederation for Physiotherapy defines Physiotherapy as:

"The set of methods, actions and techniques that, through the application of physical means, cure, prevent, recover and adapt people affected by somatic dysfunctions or those who want to maintain an adequate level of health"

and also from two points of view:

  • From the relational or external aspect, as "one of the basic pillars of therapy, available to Medicine to cure, prevent and rehabilitate patients"

  • From the substantial or internal aspect, such as "Art and Science of Physical Treatment, that is, the set of techniques that through the application of physical agents cure, prevent, recover and readapt patients susceptible to receiving physical treatment"
